The city has some of the most amazing food… and for those who love to research (as I do!), Chowhound is a great go-to site for top-notch insider recommendations and incredibly detailed reviews.
However, I would be remiss if I didn’t point you toward a few of my favorites. Here’s the scoop on a short day jaunt focused on unique, yummy food:
The Ferry Building is a mouthwatering place to stop for goodies of all sorts– fresh produce, seafood, and meats, as well as a number of great restaurants and wine bars. I highly recommend the Sat morning farmer’s market if it fits into your schedule, where local vendors set up stands outside the building and often give out free tastes!
Indoors, I looove Acme Bread, the Cowgirl Creamery, and the Golden Gate Meat Co. (great hot food counter and prepared salads) for picnic staples. Round out your finds with something sweet from Miette Patisserie. And for beverages, Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant has terrific selections in a well-laid-out shop, and the staff are incredibly helpful. Take the time to taste at the wine bar before making your decision… this is a staycation, right?
If you’re looking for souvenirs, Scharffen Berger chocolate is always well-received. It’s uniquely SF, and in another league from those nostalgic but overly-sweet Ghirardelli squares your grandmother always used to have in her candy jar.
Walk along the Embarcadero, browsing through Pier 39 and Fisherman’s wharf, but don’t snack too much! You’ll need room for the final piece de resistance…
…that is, if you’re lucky enough to score reservations at the highly acclaimed Restaurant Gary Danko, with 5-star food and choreographed service that is almost as elegant as a ballet. Great place for an anniversary/birthday, btw.
Enjoy your culinary delights! and get ready for the next staycation post– we’re going to work off those calories around the city.
