A Way to Get Your Heart Rate Up (Besides the Stock Market)

Admittedly, it’s not easy for me to to commit to an exercise schedule.  Especially when I’m super busy or have low energy, I procrastinate– there have definitely been weeks at a time when I’ve done minimal cardiovascular activity.  But what gets me back on track is the endorphin high you get after working out; too long without it and I crave that feeling.

The other benefit I appreciate is the mental clarity that comes with a good workout.  Even if I have a lot on my plate, spending even 45 minutes on myself does wonders for my sanity. Concentrating on improving my time or even just letting my mind wander is a great respite from the stressors of daily life.  Especially with the market taking terrifying swings each day, I find my solo time especially invaluable.

Since I’ve been working out pretty regularly, I also noticed an uptick in membership promotions offered as the economy faltered– while none had approached the level of what I would consider a good deal, now they’re starting to pull out the big discounts.  If you’re interested in doing something for your body and mind and have $15 a month, you may want to check these out:

(disclaimer:  I have no professional association with 24hr fitness besides the fact that I’m a member– which is why I know about their promos)

Costco offers a 2-year non-renewable 24 Hr Fitness membership for ~$300.

Pros: That works out to be ~$13/month over the life of the membership.  You do get access to all their regular clubs, so it’s nice that you’re not restricted to one location, but you don’t get access to the nicer/bigger super-sport and ultra-sport clubs.

Cons: Not valid for current members.  I don’t like that it’s non-renewable since they’ll probably stick you with more fees to sign up again.

For a 3-year membership plus 4 training sessions, you can sign up for the Keep Fit All Sport Membership on the 24 Hr website for $600– but Dealnews has a coupon (AFPPAHPVXJ) that cuts it to $500!

Pros: About $14/month for the first 3 years, plus the bonus sessions to get you started.  This one allows you access to all the regular clubs, too.  (Note: You have to pick one club to sign up at initially, but the membership will be accepted at other locations.)  I like that renewal is $150/year, which keeps you at <$13/month membership.

Cons: that’s a lot of money to shell out upfront, so it’s not that worth it if you don’t think you’ll stick with it long term.

How do you motivate yourself to stay on track?  What keeps you going?  Any great workout tips you’d like to share?
