Winter trends: Tights, Leggings and Boots, oh my!

Posted by RenaissanceTrophyWife on December 1, 2008

So I was making a run to Loehmann’s on my late lunch break a few weeks ago, since I figured it’s better to be prepared for cold weather sooner rather than later.  In particular, I had some cute patterned tights and thicker leggings in mind to update my wardrobe cheaply for the season. I’ve also been looking for a pair of comfy flat winter boots under $60, but haven’t been actively shopping for them since it’s not an absolute necessity.

Loehmann’s didn’t disappoint, and I waltzed out of the store in 20 minutes with 4 pairs of tights ($8 a 2-pack at half off) and a couple pairs of leggings in black and charcoal ($7 a pair, again half off).  I was so caught up in the glow of shopping so efficiently and economically that I almost missed the Going Out of Business signs plastered all over the Shoe Pavilion a block away.

Even through the window, it was evident that the lunch crowds had ravaged the displays, scattering stilettos and sneakers far and wide.  I wasn’t hopeful of finding anything good, but sometimes that’s when your expectations are far exceeded. Trying to be disciplined, I told myself I’d only look for 10 minutes, then get out of there. Luckily, it was mid-afternoon so I was free to try on shoes, hopping around one-legged, without getting run over in the aisles.

In my allotted 10 minutes, I zeroed in on these grey suede boots.  Kinda Gossip Girl, I know, but cute nonetheless.  Being a late-20s chica, I now have to be conscious of dressing 10 years older at work, but only a little bit younger on weekends, as much as I would love to look like Blake Lively.  But I digress.

The boots were displayed in-store as over-the-knee, but I tried scrunching them down, and that worked much better for me.  (Sorry they’re scrunched to different heights here!  My black jeans weren’t cooperating.)

Thanks to the ridiculous clearance going on, I walked out of Shoe Pavilion in 15 minutes, with a pair of boots that originally retailed at 3 figures.  They served me well on my trip to Chicago, and I’m looking forward to wearing them all winter long!

To recap that lunch break for you–

Tights: $8
Boots: $15
Compliments from total strangers on the street, and staying warm to boot? Priceless.

BTW, if you’re looking to score a pair of flat boots, Steve Madden has some here.  Use code MADDEN20 to get 20% off.

What’s your latest serendipitous fashion find?
