And the madness begins

Posted by RenaissanceTrophyWife on January 21, 2010

So now that we’re planning our wedding (gulp), I’m trying not to get totally overwhelmed with all the blogs and magazines and sources of inspiration out there.  BUT, I saw these on ideeli and couldn’t help thinking of a certain event.

I love these simple but elegant options for a rehearsal dinner dress:

And these would look fab on my bridesmaids.  I kinda want one for myself, and they’d be super rewearable, too.  I don’t think it comes out on the far right dress, but there are sweet rosettes on the front.  So pretty!

That’s not the best part– they’re all <$70!  No, I didn’t leave off a zero. And there are dozens of other cute cocktail dresses to boot.

What do you think?  Which one would you prefer to wear as a bridesmaid?  I might just bite the bullet…

It’s still boot season

Posted by RenaissanceTrophyWife on January 16, 2010

I love my warm, cozy boots… but I don’t love how my jeans or leggings get scrunched up inside the shaft of the boot.

Thanks to the $1 bin at Target, I’ve had a cheap, easy way to keep my pants snugly tucked inside my boots for the entire winter.  Mitten holders to the rescue!  Turn up the cuff of your jeans, attach these like a stirrup, and you’re set.

Hm, these look suspiciously like the stirrups sold at Stirrupz.com ($25) or JeanStraps.com ($10) but are a fraction of the price.  Target for the win!

Anyways, looks like we’re in for some more cold weather, but at least my toes will be toasty inside my boots– and I know my jeans will stay put.  If/when these wear out they could be replicated pretty easily, too.

Any bargain finds prove surprisingly useful this winter?  Share your faves!

It’s Been 6 Months…

Posted by RenaissanceTrophyWife on April 15, 2009

… since my last real haircut.  That’s a pretty long time, even for me!  One thing just led to another, I kept going in for bang trims, and before you know it, half a year’s gone by.  I guess long layers are really the cut to go for if you don’t have the time to maintain your hair.

Hee hee…  at least my stylist rocks and is well worth shelling out for.  I’m lucky I still look quite presentable with the wash and wear “styling” I do every morning; but I could see how 6 months between cuts could drive some people nuts.

Would you rather spend more and get less frequent haircuts, or spend less and maintain your hair more regularly?  I know it’s pretty dependent on hair type, but just curious if anyone else goes the non-existent low-maintenance route like I do.

Louboutin Love

Posted by RenaissanceTrophyWife on April 14, 2009

My first purchase from Gilt Groupe!  Safely cushioned for the cross-country journey…

And the big reveal!  Black Louboutin Decoltissimos for less than 50% of the retail price.

Couldn’t resist a pic of the signature soles.

Sigh…  I love them.  So does the BF– I did a little victory prance around the apartment which was quite well-received.

Compared with Stuart Weitzman pumps, Louboutins feel slightly narrower and run true to size.  While the rule of thumb I’ve heard is to go half a size up in Louboutins as they run small, I didn’t find that to be the case for me.  I knew the sale was coming up, so I sized myself at a local department store on my lunch hour…  and was very glad I had that reassurance before purchasing.

While they’re a splurge, I consider them an investment in my career wardrobe, and they’ll continue to serve me well for at least the next few years.  Louboutins have a fantastic reputation for quality, and I plan on keeping these classically beautiful pumps around for as long as I can!  I’ve already looked up my local shoemaker who can resole the toes using matching red rubber.

The female equivalent of Hermés ties, Louboutin pumps are elegant, stylish, feminine and powerful.  Honestly, aren’t those pointy toes the equivalent of a (perfectly arched) raised eyebrow that says, “Don’t mess with me”?

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to own that interview.

(Note:  Do not attempt substitution with Louboutin sandals during workdays, unless you want to be mistaken for one of these poor girls.)

What’s your favorite work-related splurge?

Beauty Bargain Bulletin: Perricone MD on sale!

Posted by RenaissanceTrophyWife on February 9, 2009

Generally I’m kind of a beauty bargain shopper– I really love the high-end stuff (oooh, Dermalogica!) but will only buy it if it’s on deep discount or I get some fantastic freebies.

My morning routine includes Pond’s cold cream (unscented), Cetaphil, Oil of Olay moisturizer + SPF15, and my favorite chapstick.  So glamorous, I know.

But soon, my bathroom sink will have a luxe addition– Perricone MD is having a deal on a couple of their basic products– cleanser and toner!

These normally retail at $35 each for a 5 oz bottle, but with coupon codes CLEAR09 (toner) and REFINE09 (cleanser), you can get them for $10 each, with free shipping!  I had to pay <$1 in sales tax, but hey, that’s totally worth it.

Tip:  When you add in the coupon code, it’ll add another product to your cart called “cleanser offer” or “toner offer”.  I think you can only use the discount once, so just remove the regular “cleanser” or “toner” item, leaving the special offer in your cart, then go ahead and shop your heart out.

Are you a basic beauty gal or do you have a fabulous facial routine?  Share your favorite products!
